Back to the Middle Ages in Glendalough and Kilkenny

June 17, 2015

Without a doubt, Dublin is fun and worth a few days spending in. But when I knew I’d visit Ireland, I wanted to see some of its beautiful landscapes too. During a two-and-a-half day trip, there’s no time to drive around much but after some research I found the perfect spot for a day trip out of town. The valley of Glendalough, in the Wicklow mountains, supposed to be one of Ireland’s most beautiful areas and is only an hour drive away from Dublin. On the way I also got to see the typical grasslands with plenty of sheep, but Glendalough was truly beautiful. The monastic settlement dates back to the 6th century and is one of of the country’s most important historical sites, surrounded by lakes, rivers and forests (any leprechauns?). As we were driving towards Kilkenny, the scenery changed into barren mountains, in where the “Wicklow Gap” serves as a great viewpoint.

Kilkenny however is a small town with – of course – medieval roots. We found more cute pubs, churches, castles – everything an Ireland visitor could ask for! I think we made the most of our (unfortunately) short time in Ireland 🙂

I have been to both places. I love Ireland and Irish people. I am familiar with most of photos you posted. Your posts remind me of my good memories in Ireland.
