Hot days and cool lakes in the Salzkammergut

July 14, 2015

The first weekend of July has been the hottest so far, and the best way to survive the heat was cooling off in some crystal clear lakes with a pleasant temperature of 20 °C. Anyway, Vienna was unbearable and I felt lucky that I could join my friends on that trip, especially because I like the Salzkammergut so much. The scenery enchants me every time I get there. There’s Gmunden with its beautiful castle, the old spa town of Bad Ischl with an imperial history and – most importantly – lots of lakes, from small to big, from turquoise to dark blue. A great insider’s tip are the two Langbathseen, which are only connected through a narrow road. The first lake is perfect for a refreshing swim, whereas the second you have to walk to another 40 minutes, but you’ll get rewarded by spectacular mountain views. We enjoyed pretty good views from the farm house, we stayed in, too.

I revisited the cute town of Hallstatt and finally made it to the interesting charnel house, which I missed last time. But soon it got so hot again, we couldn’t wait to get back into the water! Please, also check out my post of Hallstatt and St. Wolfgang 🙂

Yes I think every season has its own charm. I have to check it out in the winter though 🙂

I have just returned home from travelling in Europe for a few weeks, and I spent two days in Hallstatt! I might have been there the same time as you haha!

Oh really?! Was it as hot when you were there? Did you enjoy it? 😀

Yes, it was definitely hot! The weather only started to cool down the day after we left Hallstatt to go to Vienna. I still really enjoyed it, but we made sure to avoid doing anything much in the hottest part of the day! I was particularly interested by the salt mine tour – I love learning about history, so finding out about the thousands of years of civilisation in that area really fascinated me.

Yeah the history of Hallstatt is really interesting. On my trip to Ireland I learned that the celts are originally from that area, wow!

So beautiful, lovely photos!!! 😀 The lakes looks like a dream but 20 C? Isn’t that a little cold? Hehe! I’ve never swam in a lake before, i’m used to the Greek seas which are a lot hotter 😛 But i’m really looking forward to visit Gmunden soon and go for a swim 😀 Temperatures are rising again in Vienna…

It might sound a bit cold, but once the weather is so hot it’s nice and refreshing. It was actually perfect! Don’t miss it, I wish I could go there again since the next heatwave is coming up 🙂

Never been to Salzkammergut but the lake pictures look really beautiful! Wish I could be there now instead of being stuck in hot Vienna 😉
