Surfers and sunset at Lake Neusiedl

November 21, 2015

We had some really beautiful November days so far. On such a sunny day some of my best friends and I went on a little “sunset tour” to the nearby Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl) in the province of Burgenland. Because of its generous size, locals kindly call it “Meer der Wiener” (Sea of the viennese), however due to the lake’s shallowness and muddy underground, the water isn’t as clear and blue as you might wish. Some affectionate surfers and sailors made use of the perfect wind conditions, even though it was a little windy for us 😉

Neusiedl1Neusiedl9During summer this is a popular swimming spot. There’s truly some beach feeling.

Neusiedl2If the conditions are right, lots of water sport fans are found there at any season.

I envy these beautiful sceneries in Vienna, they just made my heart calm, and feel clam enduring the city life.
Such a nice escape from the weekday world! Is it far from where you are to these amazing weekend places?
The wind is so strong from your photos with your friend, and the water actually look unique even not with its usual shades of blue, some kinda mysterious water i believe!

Hey Tiff, thanks for your nice feedback! It depends, most places are really close to Vienna, about one hour drive or so. The water there is so murky, so you can’t see at all what’s in it, definitely mysterious 😉 xx

I can see how windy the day was but must say the sunset photos are magnificant.

I guess thanks to wind we had such a clear sky that day. Thanks for your nice words, I really appreciate it!

These photos are just absolutely lovely! It really does look like you guys have been having some great weather. I have to say that Berlin has also been getting decent weather in comparison to previous years! We have had more sun that expected, that is for sure!

It was super chilly, those kite surfers and sailors were hardcore, hehe. Thanks for reading!

It looks beautiful and very big. Can’t believe it’s just a lake! Btw. if there are seats available, i’ll join my husband on his flight to Vienna on December 26, so I was wondering if you know whether the restaurants are open by then or if they will still be closed for christmas?

    • Reply sileas November 27, 2015 at 3:02 pm

Oh that sounds wonderful! 26th is a national holiday here, so shops will be closed, however most of the traditional Viennese coffee houses should be open and I’m sure you’ll find something, so you don’t have to starve 😉 Also the xmas lights are all over the city and very beautiful.

[…] Apparently 2015 was the year of the Austrian lakes. Even in November there was enough sunshine to encourage surfers to follow their passion at the Neusiedlersee. […]
