What’s left 3 years after my round the world trip

October 11, 2016
travel map

It was today – exactly 3 years ago – when I left for my biggest adventure so far: I traveled around the world for 7 months. I can’t believe it’s been already THREE years! I’ve been planning that trip for the longest time and recall the excitement in my tummy when I finally packed my bag (which was a 50 liter backpack btw) and headed off to the airport for my first destination – India!

Back then I kept records of my travels here, mainly for friends and family. For this “anniversary” I’m taking the opportunity to include my online travel journal in what has become sweet/escapes today: I finally completed my travel map with all destinations I have written about! I’d be super happy if you take a look and give me your feedback 🙂

Anyways, I often question myself what has left after such a – you may think – eye-opening experience except for a few passport stamps and a big hole in the bank account. Certainly a lot of memories: I met dozens of interesting, awesome people along the way – even we were friends for a limited time only – I enjoyed every moment I shared with them. Even better, I found my bf/soul mate/favourite travel partner – and, amazingly enough, he’s still with me 😀 Traveling also improved my planning, organizing and improvising skills. It taught me a few things about other people and myself but most of all, I learned to listen to my intuition.

Which were my favourite moments? Just to name a few, I practiced yoga in India, taught English in Thailand, slept in a capsule hotel in Japan and swam with jellyfish in Palau – experiences that still leave me in awe! Will I ever be so carefree in my life again?

However it wasn’t only a journey “for fun” but also about facing my roots and cultural background in a country so far from home, yet it felt like a home-coming. My mom and I got reunited after we haven’t seen each other for almost 20 years.

I hit a lot of unknown terrain and traveled as far as I did never before and along with many happy moments, there were some challenging, sometimes even scary ones too. I never had the feeling that I was breaking out of normal life – no that exactly IS life!

Literally at the end of the world me and my boyfriend met again, together with some silent witnesses made of stone.

Some monuments I’ve seen a hundred times on photos and TV but still took my breath away when I saw it with my own eyes.

I first thought, once I covered a destination, I’m done with it and can go to the next one – how little did I know! Quite the contrary, my desire to revisit the same places has been growing ever since. And although I was pretty exhausted after 7 months moving from place to place, I knew this couldn’t be the last time I did something like that. The travel bug is still biting me more than ever…

Thanks for reading and joining me today on my throwback journey. Would you like to get more information on how to plan a round-the-world trip or what budget you’ll need? I’m thinking about giving tips in some future posts… Let me know!

    • Reply sileas October 20, 2016 at 4:38 pm

You have had a wonderful journey around the world! Reading this brought back memories from my trips to India. Practicing yoga in India is one of the best things I have done. Especially early morning yoga. Getting restless now and I think I have to get back there soon again 🙂
