A walk on frozen Lake Neusiedl

January 28, 2017
frozen lake Neusiedl

After my rather sensory-overloaded post about Tunis, I’m sharing something on the quieter, more winter-ish side this time: We’re experiencing a rather harsh winter this year and not often you get the opportunity to walk or ice-skate on a natural frozen lake. Last week I did a little excursion to nearby Neusiedlersee, a favourite relaxation destination for us Viennese (see also here) . It was a spontaneous idea and therefore I was on my own, however I really enjoyed the peace the vast, wide scenery offered and seeing the people enjoying all kinds of activities on ice. The lighthouse of Podersdorf was a brilliant photo spot but he icing on the cake was the postcard-perfect sunset that dipped the sky into pastel colours reflected by the lake. Though it was really pretty, it was freezing cold and my fingers and toes got totally numb! After an hour I had enough and left with these pictures…

Cool pics 🙂 I would have been terrified to go on the ice.

Thanks! It’s a bit scary at first but the ice felt very solid 🙂

I have been waiting for this post since you posted pictures on instagram!! 🙂 it looks sooo amazing!! I really wanna go there too, how did you get there? public transport? 🙂

Hehe I’m happy to hear that 🙂 It’s fairly easy from Vienna – take the train to Neusiedl and from there you can switch straight to a bus that takes you to Podersdorf. The whole trip only takes about an hour!

    Hi Julia,

wow, die Bilder sind wirklich der Hammer! 🙂

Really nice photos Julia. And it still amazes me how you were able to take a good shot while jumping that high! Picture perfect! 🙂

Haha thank you! I can remote control my camera with my phone, that makes things easier 😉

Looks great! I wonder, how do people know it’s safe to go on the ice? (Much less jump on it!) People here in Wroclaw have been ice fishing all month. I’m afraid my weight will cause it to crack!

    • Reply sileas February 4, 2017 at 10:44 am

I heard a minimum of 15 cm thickness is required to be considered safe, so I think there are people are checking on that. It’s been so cold the weeks before that the ice felt very solid actually.

ah that purple hue.. so beautiful 🙂 but yes in that cold i would probably have lasted less than hr too lol.

    • Reply sileas February 4, 2017 at 11:00 am

It felt so nice being back indoors after that 😀

  • Reply wazwu February 3, 2017 at 11:56 pm

Even thought it was so cold, you still got such pretty photos. Did you operate the camera with gloves on? I always find that to be tricky! Hard to pick a favorite, but I really like that one of you jumping! Pretty sure I wouldn’t look so elegant if I tried a jump like that, hahaha.

    • Reply sileas February 4, 2017 at 11:03 am

I had gloves on but my fingers were exposed and about to fall off 😛 Especially the phone is impossible to navigate with gloves… Honestly, it took a few attempts to get that jump shot and I picked the most elegant looking one 😉

Sooo schöne Fotos! Ich war im letzten Jahr zum ersten Mal am Neusiedlersee und fand es richtig toll da. Eine schöne Kulisse mit dem Leuchtturm 🙂
    Lieben Gruß, Anna
