Street Art in Manhattan and Brooklyn

street art guide NYC

One thing you’ll notice when you walk the streets of NYC is, besides all the hustle-and-bustle, that the city is anything else than a dull, grey concrete jungle. The eclectic street art scene has taken over the most blank wall spaces, making the Big Apple a colourful open museum. During the years I’ve been collecting photos of my favourite pieces of art and I’m happy to participate in my fellow blogger’s photo project 12 magic mottos and this month’s theme of Streetart to show you some of them. Not only I like the artworks by themselves but also the positive and sometimes critical messages they spread… I was trying to credit every artist in this article, although in some cases I couldn’t recall every artist/location, as always your comments are very much appreciated πŸ˜‰

Anyways, let’s start the little tour with one of the most iconic art series that define the quarter of Little Italy:

Liberty by Tristan Eaton

Big City Dreams by Tristan Eaton

Audrey Hepburn by Tristan Eaton

Neighbouring Chinatown also has a lot of graffiti but this “Welcome to Chinatown” series by Victor Ving is probably the best one!

Don’t forget to look out for the mosaics that decor almost every subway station. Like this one at Jay Street Station.

I found this fish mosaic at Delancey Street Station quite impressive too! I’m thinking about a series dedicated about subway art only, what to do you think?

Brain Tree by Beau Stanton, Bowery

Missbehave by Mike Grant, Lower East Side

Angel Wings by Oksana Prokopenko, Lower East Side

Unfortunately I don’t remember where I took these ones and I can’t credit the artists… Any hints?

Immigrant children on Ellis Island by JR, TriBeCa

Sign Language by Cre8tive YouTH*ink, Downtown Brooklyn

Geese by Joshua Gabriel, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Coney Island Art Walls, Brooklyn

Williamsburg with all its industrial grounds may be THE hot spot for street artists: The Bushwick Collective has designed most of the walls and created this awesome gallery!

As I’m back to NYC these days, I’m excited to discover more murals. Find more personal NYC articles here. What’s your favourite piece of art?

Love these Julia. I must say I cannot recall seeing any street art in NYC but then again I probably wasn’t looking hard enough. Yes you should definitely do a post on subway art – I would love to see that.
