From Yosemite to Lake Tahoe and everything in-between

Wild West towns near Yosemite and Tahoe

The view of the majestic Eastern Sierras unfolded as we left Yosemite National Park towards East. As we continued our road trip through California and Nevada we passed by breathtaking sceneries and Wild West towns.

1. Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes – an upscale mountain resort town with lots of Alpine-style hotels – was the ideal spot to relax after some nights at the campsite and explore the beautiful surroundings like the Hayden Cabin or the Hot Creek Geological Site.

2. Bodie

We continued our way north and visited one of America’s best preserved ghost towns: Bodie. During its peak up to 10,000 people lived in that booming gold mining town that had everything a functioning town needed – a church, schools, stores and saloons. Today only a few buildings are left, most of them in a state of decay and fortunately managed as a Historic State Park. It’s a fascinating insight into the past of the Old West and great ruin-porn 😉

3. Virginia City

Contrary to Bodie, Virginia City in Nevada remains one of the Old West towns that are still kind of operating. Of course, tourism has replaced mining as the main source of income but it still feels like a journey back in time. Saloons, historic hotels and shops that sell Wild West (and pro-Trump!) merchandise are the main attractions in Virginia City but it’s also an attractive destination for ghost hunters as many buildings claim to be haunted. Whether you believe into ghosts or not – a ghost tour is definitely one of the more entertaining things to in V.C. and at the same time you’ll get a glimpse of the splendid interiors of these old buildings.

4. Lake Tahoe

Our last stop before heading back to the coast was Lake Tahoe on the Californian/Nevada border. The Alpine lake has crystal-clear blue water and is surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery but don’t let the photos fool you – as a prime vacation destination – it is busy (especially in the “main” town South Lake Tahoe)! Traffic is high and parking is rare: Some beaches close as early as 9 am when lots are full! It still is pretty though but I’d try to avoid high season next time 😉

5. Recommended stay:

Austria Hof Lodge: I didn’t pick this place because of its name (although it made me curious) but for its great location, comfortable rooms and fair prices in Mammoth Lakes. Plus: They have a nice bar and restaurant downstairs. You can book a room here.

Mellow Mountain Hostel: Finding affordable accommodation (below the 200 $/night range) near Lake Tahoe during high season was almost impossible but this place is a real gem in an expensive area. It’s a converted motel run by a young, devoted team and offers all amenities you’d expect from a modern hostel. If you don’t feel like mingling with the other guests, you can keep your privacy in one of their private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. And if you’re budget is super tight, you can camp in their backyard 😉

I also went to Tahoe for the first time this summer and holy shit, the traffic is insane! I thought it was supposed to be some tranquil place! How can South Lake Tahoe have a street with only one lane in either direction? Wild.

Thanks for posting this, Julia. Your blog and beautiful photos reminded us about a memorable trip we’ve had in the same area more than a decade ago with a dear friend who has passed away.

I thought Bodie was fascinating, I couldn’t help thinking what a bizarre sight it must have been for anyone who had spent weeks travelling across the mountains. A town with everything in the middle of nowhere.

Absolutely! What a crazy, long and exhausting journey it must’ve been!
