Falling for fall in the Connecticut countryside

Connecticut fall foliage trips

Exploring the New England countryside during the golden month of October has always been high on my priority list. And finally we made it! On a sunny weekend we ventured out from the city to the state of Connecticut, which is known to have some great fall foliage and adorable little towns.

And when we saw these gorgeous fall colours we knew we were in the right place!

Our first stop,Kent Falls State Park is a wonderful sight surrounded by golden leaves…

… but also the nearby town of Kent is worth a stop: Embedded in hills and forests, Kent has a lively town community and some great cafés and restaurants. I can highly recommend Ore Hill & Swyft who serves delicious pizza and brunch inside an historic, beautifully refurbished wooden barn.

A short drive away is New Milford: The Lover’s Leap State Park gives you a pretty view of the fall foliage over the Housatonic River!

Also the town of New Milford itself is a picturesque place. Both, Kent and New Milford btw played a major role of inspiration for the fictional town of Stars Hollow, known from the hit series Gilmore Girls! I wasn’t a particular fan of the show but kinda got sucked into the GG vibes, especially when I saw the all-fall decorated gazebo in the centre of town – just like in Stars Hollow 😉

If you’re in the area for the weekend, don’t miss the Elephant’s Trunk flea market, which takes place every Sunday and where vendors sell everything from treasures to junk. It’s fun to browse through the vast variety of stuff and have a snack or two 😉

The village life is one thing but the area also is dotted with lakes and ponds and make some great destinations for hiking!

Last but not least: Get your pub grub at the White Horse (great, bustling English pub and cuisine) and pay a visit to Stars Hollow Yarns, the cutest and friendliest store around (even if you’re not into knitting and crochet), which is owned – yes, you name it – by a Gilmore Girls super-fan 🙂

Es ist wirklich ein Stückchen “Heile Welt” und amerikanisches Kleinstadtleben wie es im Buche steht 🙂

Thanks for the post Julia. It’s one thing that never ceases to amaze me, America is the world’s leading economy (challenged by China, but still), spearhead of industry, technology, immense cities, and a young nation with almost no history. Yet, within a few miles of – excellent – roads, you can get bak to Nature, quaint little towns or cities. A luxury really.
    Take care

You named it Brian! The country has so much to offer and I’ve only seen a fraction of it. I hope to explore more piece by piece!

You will likely appreciate it more after each piece. I spent 2.5 years in the US for Grad school, plus 3 months in New York. I know what most the world think of the US, I know there are some “dark” sides, but it is a fascinating country. And great people too, like anywhere.
        Bon week-end. 😉
